After invention of the cigarette rolling machine in 1880, cigarettes had expanded from a hand-rolled, niche-market product to a mass-market success. Still, in 1892, the year penciled on the back of this photo, the use of cigarettes was insignificant compared to cigars, pipes, chewing tobacco and snuff.
