Cotton strippers, such as the one attached to this tractor ca. '70, harvested full cotton bolls from defoliated stalks and separated strands of fiber for further processing.  Cotton-harvesting machinery became steadily more reliable during the first half of the 20th C, and strippers replaced hand picking.  Agronomists developed new strains of cotton adapted for machine harvesting, and farm employment declined.
